mixed ultimate, its relation to open and womens, was a hot topic on rsd the other week. what do i think? i play mixed. i play co-ed ultimate. i used to play open. i still do, sorta, but only at Paganello on Scandal. And even that i don't know how long it will last. but still, do i think the mixed division is detrimental to the growth and development of the open (men's) and women's divisions? sure. i'll say it. if there was no mixed division, new players would go directly into men's and women's. instead, this same number of new players is divided among three divisions instead of just 2. same can be said of the talent. it's not divided among 3 divisions instead of just 2. is this a bad thing? nope. mixed is a relatively new thing competatively in the ultimate world. i don't remember anything about coed when i started in '95. from what i hear, the mixed division started in '98 or '99. it's new. it's different, and it's starting to find its place. growth and change. it should stand on its own, it's just another division. just give it time.
