content, content, content. years ago, C99 or C98 web projects, and i was all about the content then. Drives users. content. new content keeps users coming back. not web services. not tools. it's information. information flow. and now it's spreading. television. movies. networks and production houses. advertising. how does tv stand up without advertising? how do television stations, tv networks, how do they make money? is it solely advertising? is that the only method of income? how does a local tv station make money? they have to pay for utilities, infrastructure for broadcasting, probably some license fees for frequencies, payroll. then they have to pay for programming. licensing on the programming. So where does the money come in? Advertising? Really? is that it? Seriously? Networks buy programming, sell it to stations. Money comes from advertising. Production firms create shows to sell to networks and the money comes from advertising. Wow. Seriously. Scary. Get rid of commercials and what happens? Turns into the music industry. And what happens then? I guess I'm mostly talking about broadcast networks. cable networks get some income from subscriptions, right? I wonder what the percentages are there. so what happens when advertising goes away? when content itself becomes available for purchase? will that be enough to make up the missing advertising revenue? and why have TV networks in the first place? why can't production houses start making shows directly for download? then what happens to the networks? if I'm a production house I'd be looking into it, but then again, with how much it costs to produce a tv show these days, that's a lot of selling that needs to go on. I wonder who's going to be the first indie hit downloaded sellable tv show?
